A 3PL runs your warehouse and transport so you can run your business. Here is what to expect and how to decide.
Third-party logistics — 3PL — is the outsourcing of warehousing, transport and related supply chain activities to a specialist provider. In Saudi Arabia, 3PL has grown quickly as retailers, e-commerce brands, manufacturers and distributors look to expand nationally without building their own logistics infrastructure. This guide explains what a 3PL provides, the benefits and risks, and how to choose one.
What a 3PL includes
- Warehousing: storage, inventory management, pick and pack, kitting and returns.
- Transportation: inbound from ports, inter-city FTL and LTL, dedicated fleets and last-mile delivery.
- Freight forwarding and customs for international flows.
- Technology: a warehouse management system, tracking and reporting, integrated with the client's ERP or store.
- Account management and continuous improvement.
Some providers also offer 4PL-style supply chain planning and management across multiple 3PLs and carriers.
Benefits of outsourcing
Variable cost instead of fixed investment in buildings, vehicles and staff; faster expansion into new cities; access to systems and expertise; scalability through seasonal peaks; and management time freed for the core business.
Risks and how to manage them
Loss of direct control, dependence on the provider's performance and the effort of transition. These are managed by clear service level agreements, KPIs, regular reviews, shared data and a well-planned onboarding.
Pricing models
Per pallet stored per month, per order or per unit picked, per delivery, or a fixed monthly fee for dedicated space and vehicles. Most 3PL contracts combine several, plus pass-through of packaging and consumables.
KPIs to set
Stock accuracy, order accuracy, on-time dispatch, on-time delivery, damage rate, returns turnaround and cost per order. Agree targets in the contract and review monthly.
Choosing a 3PL in Saudi Arabia
Location fit with your inbound gateway and customers; storage types matching your products, including temperature control; system capability and integration; own transport fleet; SFDA and other licences where relevant; and references from clients in your sector.
Onboarding
Plan the transfer of stock and data, run parallel operations briefly if possible, and start with one product line or region before full migration.
