Air wins on speed, road wins on cost. Knowing where the break-even lies keeps your freight budget under control.
Within Saudi Arabia, most cargo moves by road, yet air freight plays an important role for time-critical shipments across the Kingdom's long distances. Riyadh to Jeddah is 950 km by road and roughly 90 minutes by air. Understanding when the time saved is worth the cost is essential for logistics managers.
Transit time
Domestic air cargo can be tendered in the morning and available for collection at the destination airport the same evening, with door delivery the next morning. Road FTL on the same lane delivers next day, and LTL in two to three days. The real difference is therefore often less than a day on major lanes, but it grows for remote regions such as Tabuk, Jizan or Najran.
Cost
Air is priced per chargeable kilogram with a volumetric divisor of 6,000, and typically costs several times more than road per kilogram. For a single pallet of urgent spare parts, air may be justified; for ten pallets of retail stock it rarely is.
Cargo suitability
- Air: pharmaceuticals, vaccines, electronics, aircraft and machinery parts, documents, fashion samples, live-saving medical supplies.
- Road: palletised FMCG, building materials, chemicals, furniture, oversized items, anything not urgent.
Dangerous goods, lithium batteries and oversized items face stricter limits by air.
Handling
Air cargo passes through airport terminals and requires security screening and airline acceptance cut-offs. Road freight is collected and delivered door to door with less handling.
Rule of thumb
If the cost of the delay — a stopped machine, a missed launch, a patient waiting — exceeds the air premium, fly it. Otherwise, truck it. For GCC destinations, road via land border is usually faster than air once customs and terminal time are counted.
