Air freight is the fast lane into and out of the Kingdom. Here is how it is priced, where it lands and when it is worth it.
Air freight moves a small share of Saudi Arabia's trade by weight but a large share by value. Electronics, pharmaceuticals, fashion, aircraft and machinery parts, perishables and e-commerce all depend on air cargo for speed. This guide explains the Kingdom's air cargo gateways, how air freight is priced, realistic transit times and the situations where paying for air is the right decision.
The airports
- King Khalid International (Riyadh): the largest cargo airport, serving the capital and central region with direct freighter and belly capacity from Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
- King Abdulaziz International (Jeddah): serves the western region and the Hajj and Umrah economy, with strong links to Asia and Africa.
- King Fahd International (Dammam): serves the Eastern Province with regional and Asian connections.

How air freight is priced
Rates are per chargeable kilogram — the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (length × width × height in cm ÷ 6,000). Add fuel and security surcharges, origin and destination terminal handling, customs and delivery. Dense cargo is cheaper per unit than bulky, light cargo.
Transit times
Airport to airport is typically one to two days from Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Door to door, including export handling, customs clearance and delivery, is usually two to four days. Express integrator services offer faster door-to-door times for smaller shipments at a premium.
General cargo versus express
Express services suit documents and parcels up to a few hundred kilograms with simplified customs. General air cargo suits larger consignments, palletised goods and special handling such as temperature control or dangerous goods.
Restricted and special cargo
Lithium batteries, dangerous goods, pharmaceuticals and perishables face airline and regulatory rules. Correct classification, packaging and documentation are required, and temperature-controlled air cargo needs cold storage at both airports.
When air makes sense
- The cost of delay exceeds the air premium: stopped production, missed launches, urgent medical needs.
- High value-to-weight goods where freight is a small fraction of value.
- Perishables and short shelf-life products.
- Samples, spare parts and small replenishments.
For regular high-volume replenishment, sea freight remains far more economical.
