Riyadh is big, hot and growing fast. Here are the six things that make last-mile delivery hard in the capital — and what works.
Riyadh is one of the largest cities in the Middle East by area, and its population and e-commerce volumes are growing every year. Delivering parcels to its doors is a daily test for logistics teams. These are the six challenges we encounter most often in the capital, and the solutions that consistently work.
1. Traffic and distance
Riyadh's districts stretch more than 50 km end to end and rush-hour congestion is heavy. Solution: zone-based routing so each driver works a compact area, with dynamic route optimisation and off-peak delivery slots for business customers.
2. Address accuracy
Many orders still arrive with a district name and a landmark. Solution: capture the National Address short code and GPS pin at checkout, and have drivers confirm location by WhatsApp before departing.
3. Summer heat
Parcels in a closed van can exceed 60°C. Solution: shorter routes in summer, insulated bags for sensitive items, and refrigerated vans for food, cosmetics and pharma.
4. Failed first attempts
Customers not being home is the top cause of re-delivery cost. Solution: pre-delivery calls, delivery windows, and alternative options such as leaving with a neighbour, security desk or a pickup point.
5. Cash on delivery
Handling cash slows drivers and creates reconciliation risk. Solution: card-on-delivery terminals by default and same-day cash deposit at the hub.
6. Peak demand
Ramadan, White Friday and holiday sales can triple daily volumes. Solution: forecast with your customers, pre-book surge capacity and stagger promotions across the week.
The result
Teams that address these six areas routinely achieve first-attempt success above 92 percent and cut cost per delivery significantly.
TQM International's Riyadh last-mile operation applies these practices daily for e-commerce, retail and healthcare customers.
