Sea Freight in Saudi Arabia: Ports, FCL vs LCL and Transit Times

TQM International 2 min read

Two coasts, three major container ports. Here is how sea freight into and out of Saudi Arabia works.

Sea freight carries the majority of Saudi Arabia's international trade by volume. With major container ports on both the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf, the Kingdom is well placed on the routes between Asia, Europe and Africa. Understanding the ports, the difference between full and shared containers, and realistic transit times helps importers and exporters plan sea shipments effectively.

The ports

  • Jeddah Islamic Port: the largest, serving the western region and Riyadh, with direct calls from Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean.
  • King Abdullah Port at King Abdullah Economic City: a modern deep-water port north of Jeddah with growing transhipment and import volumes.
  • King Abdulaziz Port, Dammam: the Gulf gateway serving the Eastern Province, Riyadh and cross-border trade, with services from Asia and via Jebel Ali.
  • Jubail and Yanbu: industrial ports handling petrochemicals, bulk and project cargo.

FCL versus LCL

Full container load means the shipper uses a whole 20-ft or 40-ft container. It is more economical above roughly 12 to 15 cubic metres, faster (no consolidation) and involves less handling. Less-than-container load consolidates several shippers' cargo into one container; it suits small consignments but adds consolidation time and per-cubic-metre handling charges at both ends.

Container types

Standard dry 20-ft and 40-ft, 40-ft high-cube for volume, refrigerated containers for perishables, open-top and flat-rack for oversized items, and tank containers for liquids.

Transit times

From China and Southeast Asia to Jeddah or Dammam: three to five weeks. From India: one to two weeks. From Europe to Jeddah: two to three weeks. From the US East Coast: four to six weeks. Add port handling and customs clearance of a few days after arrival.

Port charges and clearance

Terminal handling, documentation, container demurrage and detention (free days then daily charges) and customs inspection fees apply. Clearing quickly avoids demurrage, which can exceed the freight cost if a container sits.

Inland delivery

Container haulage from Jeddah to Riyadh takes about a day; from Dammam to Riyadh, same day. Containers can be delivered to the customer for unloading or de-stuffed at a warehouse near the port with cargo forwarded by road.

TQM International arranges sea freight to and from Saudi Arabia in FCL and LCL, with customs coordination at Jeddah and Dammam and container haulage across the Kingdom.
