Temperature-Controlled Logistics in Saudi Arabia: Beyond Just Keeping Things Cold

TQM International 2 min read

Chocolate, cosmetics and tablets do not need a freezer — but they cannot survive a 60°C truck either. Temperature-controlled logistics covers the whole range.

When people hear "temperature-controlled logistics" they usually think of frozen food. In reality, the largest volume of temperature-sensitive cargo in Saudi Arabia is not frozen at all. Chocolate, confectionery, cosmetics, paints, adhesives, electronics and the majority of pharmaceuticals all have upper temperature limits that a standard dry truck will exceed within minutes on a summer afternoon. Temperature-controlled logistics is the discipline of moving and storing all of these goods within their specified range.

The three service levels

  • Controlled ambient (+15°C to +25°C): the biggest category by volume, covering most tablets, capsules, cosmetics, chocolate and many chemicals. Often overlooked, and often where the costliest losses occur.
  • Chilled (0°C to +8°C): dairy, fresh produce, juices, vaccines and biologics.
  • Frozen (-18°C and below): meat, poultry, seafood and frozen ready meals.

Why controlled ambient matters so much in the Kingdom

A closed dry trailer parked at a Riyadh dock in July can reach 60°C to 70°C inside. Chocolate blooms, tablets degrade, cosmetics separate and lithium batteries become a safety risk. Reefer vehicles set to +20°C are the standard solution, and many retailers now specify controlled-ambient transport for categories they previously shipped dry.

Multi-temperature vehicles and warehouses

Dual- and triple-chamber trailers allow a single vehicle to carry frozen, chilled and ambient-controlled goods on the same route, which is essential for supermarket and pharmacy distribution. Multi-temperature warehouses in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam let a distributor hold their entire range under one roof with one inventory system.

Mapping, monitoring and proof

Every vehicle and storage chamber should be temperature-mapped to show that the set point holds throughout the space, not just at the sensor. Data loggers or telematics record conditions continuously, and the record travels with the proof of delivery so customers and regulators can verify compliance.

Industries that rely on it

Food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, cosmetics and personal care, confectionery, chemicals, floristry and high-end electronics all depend on temperature-controlled logistics in Saudi Arabia.

TQM International provides frozen, chilled and controlled-ambient transport and storage across the Kingdom, with mapped multi-temperature reefers and continuous monitoring on every shipment.
