Different cargo needs different transport. A type-by-type guide to moving goods within and beyond Saudi Arabia.
Cargo transport is a broad term covering the movement of any goods, from a pallet of bottled water to a 200-tonne transformer. In Saudi Arabia, the right transport solution depends on what the cargo is, how urgent it is and where it is going. This guide breaks the question down by cargo type so shippers can identify the service that fits.
Palletised general cargo
Packaged goods on pallets — FMCG, retail stock, industrial supplies — move by road in FTL or LTL depending on volume. Curtain-side and box trailers between cities; Dyna trucks for city delivery.
Containerised cargo
Imports and exports in 20-ft and 40-ft containers move by sea through Jeddah and Dammam and are hauled inland on skeletal trailers. Full container load (FCL) for whole containers; less-than-container load (LCL) for smaller consignments consolidated with others.
Perishable and temperature-sensitive cargo
Food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and chemicals with temperature limits travel in refrigerated vehicles and, for imports, reefer containers or air cargo. Continuous monitoring and records are essential.
Heavy and oversized cargo
Machinery, equipment and structures beyond standard limits require lowbed or modular trailers, permits, route surveys and lifting coordination.
Hazardous cargo
Chemicals, fuels, gases and certain batteries are classified as dangerous goods and require licensed carriers, certified drivers, correct labelling and safety documentation.
Urgent and high-value cargo
Spare parts, electronics and documents move by same-day courier within cities, next-day road to other cities or air cargo for the longest distances and international routes.
Bulk cargo
Aggregates, grain, cement and liquids move in tippers, hoppers and tankers on dedicated contracts.
Matching cargo to mode
- Domestic and GCC: road for almost everything; air for urgent, high-value items.
- International: sea for volume, air for speed, with road for the inland legs.
