How to Choose a Freight Forwarding Company in Saudi Arabia

TQM International 2 min read

The forwarder you choose decides how smoothly your imports clear and how much you pay. Eight criteria to compare.

Selecting a freight forwarding company in Saudi Arabia is one of the more consequential supplier decisions an importer or exporter makes. The forwarder controls the cost, speed and reliability of every international shipment, and a poor choice shows up as delayed containers, unexpected charges and customs problems. These eight criteria help separate capable forwarders from the rest.

1. Licensing

The forwarder should be a licensed customs broker or work with one, be registered with the relevant Saudi authorities, and for air freight, hold IATA cargo agent accreditation or work through an accredited agent.

2. Carrier relationships

Ask which shipping lines and airlines they contract with and on which lanes. Strong relationships mean space during peak seasons and competitive rates.

3. Trade-lane experience

A forwarder strong on China–Jeddah sea freight may be weak on Europe–Riyadh air. Choose one with proven volume on your actual lanes.

4. Customs capability

Saudi customs, SABER, SFDA and SASO requirements are specific. Test the forwarder's knowledge with a real product: what certificates does it need, and how long will clearance take?

5. Technology

Online tracking, document sharing, milestone notifications and reporting on transit times and costs are standard among serious forwarders.

6. Insurance and liability

Understand the forwarder's liability limits and ask about cargo insurance options per shipment or under an annual policy.

7. Pricing transparency

Quotes should break out ocean or air freight, origin charges, destination charges, customs, duties and taxes, and inland delivery, with surcharges stated. Beware of quotes that only show the freight rate.

8. References and financial stability

Ask for references from customers with similar volumes and products, and check the company's history. Forwarders that fail mid-shipment leave cargo stranded.

Practical next steps

Shortlist two or three forwarders, give each the same real shipment to quote, compare the itemised responses and run a trial shipment before committing your annual volume.

TQM International is a Saudi freight forwarding company handling air and sea imports and exports with customs coordination, transparent itemised pricing and road delivery across the Kingdom and the GCC.
