Freight Forwarding in Saudi Arabia: How It Works and Why Importers Use It

TQM International 2 min read

A freight forwarder is the architect of an international shipment. Here is what they do between your supplier's door and yours.

Freight forwarding is the service of planning and managing the international movement of goods on behalf of a shipper. A freight forwarder does not usually own ships or aircraft; instead it books space with carriers, prepares documentation, coordinates customs and arranges the inland legs so that cargo moves smoothly from a supplier abroad to a warehouse in Saudi Arabia — or the reverse for exports. For most importers and exporters in the Kingdom, a forwarder is the single point of contact for the whole journey.

What a freight forwarder does

  • Advises on the best mode and routing: air, sea (FCL or LCL) or multimodal.
  • Books space with airlines and shipping lines at negotiated rates.
  • Arranges collection from the supplier and delivery to port or airport of departure.
  • Prepares and checks documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, certificate of origin and any product certificates.
  • Coordinates customs clearance at origin and in Saudi Arabia through licensed brokers.
  • Arranges inland transport from Jeddah, Dammam or the airport to the final destination.
  • Tracks the shipment and manages exceptions such as delays or inspections.

Air or sea

Air freight is fast (one to three days door to door) and suits urgent, high-value or perishable goods. Sea freight is economical for volume, with transit of one to six weeks depending on origin. Forwarders often recommend a combination — sea for regular replenishment, air for launches and shortages.

Incoterms matter

The Incoterm agreed with your supplier (EXW, FOB, CIF, DAP and others) determines which parts of the journey you control and pay for. A forwarder helps choose terms that give you visibility and cost control.

Saudi-specific requirements

Imports require a valid importer registration, SABER conformity certificates for regulated products, SFDA approval for food, cosmetics and pharma, and customs declarations via FASAH. Experienced forwarders build these into the shipment plan.

Benefits for shippers

Better rates through consolidated buying, fewer errors in documentation, faster clearance, one contact instead of many, and the ability to scale international trade without building an in-house department.

TQM International provides freight forwarding by air and sea to and from Saudi Arabia, with customs coordination and road delivery to any destination in the Kingdom and the GCC.
