Land freight — the movement of goods by road — is the backbone of Saudi Arabia's domestic and regional trade. With no comprehensive freight rail network yet in place and ports concentrated on the two coasts, virtually everything that enters or is produced in the Kingdom travels by truck at some stage. Understanding how land freight operates helps shippers plan reliable, cost-effective supply chains.
The highway network
Saudi Arabia has one of the largest road networks in the region. Key freight corridors include Highway 40 linking Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam across the country; Highway 15 running north from Riyadh through Al Qassim, Hail and Al Jouf toward Jordan; the coastal Highway 5 connecting Jizan, Jeddah, Yanbu and Tabuk; and the Riyadh–Al Kharj–Al Hofuf–Salwa route toward Qatar and the UAE. Dual carriageways, fuel stations and weighbridges support heavy vehicle traffic throughout.

Transit times
Riyadh to Dammam is 5 to 6 hours; Riyadh to Jeddah 12 to 14 hours; Jeddah to Dammam 16 to 18 hours. Regional cities such as Tabuk, Abha and Jizan are one to two days from Riyadh. Cross-border lanes add customs time at the border.
Regulation
Commercial vehicles are regulated by the Transport General Authority, with rules covering vehicle licensing, driver qualifications, axle weights, driving hours and city entry restrictions for heavy vehicles during peak hours.
Planning a land freight shipment
Provide accurate weight and dimensions, pack and palletise properly, confirm loading and delivery windows, and share any site access requirements. Booking a day or more ahead secures better vehicle availability and rates.
