Border queues and 45°C heat are a dangerous combination for chilled cargo. Cross-border reefer transport needs extra planning.
Saudi Arabia exports dairy, poultry, juices, confectionery and pharmaceuticals to its GCC neighbours, and imports fresh produce and frozen foods in return. All of it must stay within a strict temperature range through long drives and border waits in extreme heat. Cross-border refrigerated (reefer) transport adds a layer of planning on top of standard cold chain practice.
Equipment for the journey
Use a reefer trailer with a fuel tank sized for at least 48 hours of continuous running, a fresh maintenance record and a telematics unit that reports temperature and location in real time. Dual-chamber trailers allow chilled and frozen goods to travel together.
Border planning
Customs inspection may require the doors to be opened. Minimise this by having complete documents ready, requesting inspection at a shaded or covered bay where available, and instructing the driver to keep door openings brief and to re-close immediately. Pre-arrival lodgement of the import declaration by the consignee's broker reduces waiting time.
Documentation
In addition to the standard invoice, packing list and certificate of origin, food shipments need a health certificate from the exporting authority, a halal certificate where applicable, and product labels compliant with GSO standards. Pharma needs SFDA export approvals. Temperature records may be requested by the importing authority.
Monitoring and escalation
Set alarm thresholds slightly inside the product's limits so the operations team is alerted before an excursion occurs. Have a contingency plan: a nearby cold store or a replacement reefer.
Transit planning
Depart so that the truck reaches the border during working hours and avoids weekend congestion. Allow buffer for clearance in the total transit estimate given to the customer.
