Choosing between Full Truck Load (FTL) and Less-than-Truckload (LTL) is the first decision in any domestic road shipment. Both are widely available in Saudi Arabia, but they serve very different needs. Getting the choice right saves money on small loads and protects service on large ones.
The core difference
With FTL you rent the whole truck; your cargo travels alone from origin to destination. With LTL you pay for the space your pallets occupy, and the carrier fills the rest of the trailer with other shippers' freight, consolidating it through a hub network.
Cost comparison
FTL is priced per trip, so the cost per pallet drops as the truck fills. LTL is priced per pallet, weight or cubic metre, which makes it far cheaper for 1 to 6 pallets. The crossover point on most Saudi lanes is around 8 to 10 pallets — above that, a dedicated truck is usually the better value.
Speed and reliability
FTL runs point to point, so Riyadh to Dammam can be same day and Riyadh to Jeddah next day. LTL passes through a consolidation hub, adding one to two days. If your delivery window is fixed, FTL gives you more control.
Handling and risk
Every time freight is loaded or unloaded, the risk of damage rises. FTL cargo is handled twice; LTL cargo may be handled four to six times. Fragile, high-value or temperature-sensitive products favour FTL.
