Heavy Cargo Transport in Saudi Arabia: Moving the Loads Standard Trucks Cannot

TQM International 2 min read

Transformers, generators, excavators and pressure vessels need heavy haulage expertise. Here is how heavy cargo moves across Saudi Arabia.

Heavy cargo — single items or consignments that exceed the weight a standard 40-ft trailer can legally carry — is a growing category in Saudi Arabia as power, water, petrochemical, mining and construction projects expand. Transformers, generators, compressors, pressure vessels, mining equipment, cranes and earthmoving machinery all require heavy transport specialists with the right trailers, permits and planning discipline.

What counts as heavy

Standard road limits in the Kingdom cap gross vehicle weight and axle loads. A single item over roughly 25 tonnes, or a load that pushes axle weights past the legal limit, needs a specialised trailer and typically a permit. Very heavy items — 60, 100 or 200 tonnes — call for modular hydraulic trailers with many axle lines to spread the load.

Equipment for heavy transport

  • Lowbed and semi-lowbed trailers (2 to 4 axles) for machinery and equipment up to around 60 tonnes.
  • Extendable lowbeds for long, heavy items such as vessels and beams.
  • Modular hydraulic trailers, combined in multiples, for transformers, reactors and loads beyond 100 tonnes.
  • Prime movers with sufficient power and, for the heaviest loads, push-pull configurations.

Permits and axle load compliance

Heavy movements require permits specifying the route, timing and axle configuration. Weighbridge checks along major highways enforce compliance, and overloaded vehicles face fines and delays. Experienced carriers calculate axle loads before quoting and select trailers accordingly.

Route planning

Bridges, culverts, overpasses, roundabouts and road works all constrain heavy movements. A route survey identifies structures with weight limits and plans alternatives, night moves or escorts where needed.

Lifting and rigging

Heavy cargo rarely arrives on a forklift. Cranes, lifting plans, certified rigging and coordination with site teams at both ends are part of the service.

Pricing heavy haulage

Rates depend on weight, dimensions, trailer type, distance, permits, escorts, lifting requirements and site access. Quotes are usually per move with a detailed scope.

TQM International arranges heavy cargo transport across Saudi Arabia with lowbed and modular trailers, permits, route surveys and lifting coordination as part of its project logistics services.
