Pharmaceutical Cold Chain Cargo in Saudi Arabia: Meeting SFDA Standards

TQM International 2 min read

Medicines are only as good as the temperature they were kept at. Pharma cold chain in the Kingdom demands validated equipment and a paper trail.

Pharmaceuticals, vaccines and biologics are among the most demanding cargo types in Saudi Arabia. A short temperature excursion can render a whole consignment unusable, and the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) requires distributors to demonstrate that products stayed within their labelled range throughout transport. Pharma cold chain logistics is built to provide that proof.

Temperature bands

Most pharma cargo falls into two bands: cold chain (+2°C to +8°C) for vaccines, insulin and biologics, and controlled room temperature (+15°C to +25°C) for the majority of tablets and liquids. Frozen (-20°C) and ultra-cold (-70°C) products require specialised active or passive containers.

Validated vehicles and containers

Refrigerated trucks used for pharma should be temperature-mapped to show the whole cargo space holds the set point, with calibrated sensors and alarms. For smaller consignments, qualified passive boxes with phase-change materials hold the range for 48 to 96 hours without power.

Continuous monitoring

Every shipment travels with a data logger recording temperature at short intervals. The log is downloaded at delivery and attached to the proof of delivery. Real-time telematics allow the operations team to intervene if a unit drifts during transit.

Good Distribution Practice

GDP principles — trained staff, written procedures, clean vehicles, no co-loading with incompatible goods, secure custody and deviation handling — are applied to every pharma movement.

Documentation

Maintain the temperature record, chain-of-custody signatures, vehicle qualification certificates and the SFDA-registered warehouse and transport licences for audits.

Last mile to hospitals and pharmacies

Deliveries to hospitals, clinics and pharmacies need scheduled windows, named receivers and rapid transfer into cold storage.

TQM International's cold chain fleet serves healthcare distributors across Saudi Arabia with mapped vehicles, data loggers on every trip and GDP-trained drivers.
