Road freight accounts for the largest share of most logistics budgets in Saudi Arabia, simply because nearly every product travels by truck between port, factory, warehouse and customer. Small improvements in how road freight is bought and planned therefore have a large effect on total supply chain cost. This guide looks at what drives the price, what to expect on lead times, and how experienced shippers keep road freight efficient.
What drives road freight rates
- Lane and distance: longer and less-travelled lanes cost more per trip; busy corridors such as Riyadh–Jeddah benefit from return-load availability.
- Vehicle type: flatbed and curtain-side are the baseline; box trailers cost slightly more; reefers and specialised trailers carry a premium.
- Mode: FTL is priced per trip, LTL per pallet or cubic metre.
- Timing: same-day requests, weekends and peak seasons before Ramadan and Eid raise rates.
- Accessorials: waiting time, multi-drop, tail-lift, labour, permits and restricted-zone deliveries.
- Fuel: diesel price movements feed directly into rates.
Realistic lead times
Riyadh–Dammam next day (same day possible); Riyadh–Jeddah next day for FTL, two to three days for LTL; Jeddah–Dammam two days; regional cities two to four days depending on mode. Cross-border to the GCC adds one to two days for customs.
FTL or LTL
Under roughly eight pallets, LTL is cheaper. Above ten, FTL wins on both cost and speed. Between those figures, get both quotes.
Preparation that saves money
Accurate weights and dimensions avoid re-rating. Proper palletising speeds loading and reduces damage. Booking 24 to 48 hours ahead avoids urgency surcharges. Consolidating multiple small consignments into fewer, larger dispatches reduces cost per pallet.
Documentation
A delivery note or waybill, packing list and, for regulated goods, the relevant certificates should travel with every shipment. For cross-border road freight, a commercial invoice and certificate of origin are required.
Reducing road freight cost strategically
Commit regular volumes to a dedicated fleet or contract rates; offer flexible loading windows; offer return loads; and review lane-by-lane performance data quarterly with your carrier.
