How to Choose a Trucking Company in Saudi Arabia: A Buyer's Checklist

TQM International 2 min read

There are thousands of trucking companies in the Kingdom. Ten questions separate the reliable ones from the rest.

Saudi Arabia has thousands of registered trucking companies, from single-owner operators to national fleets. The price difference between them can be small; the service difference can be enormous. A late or damaged shipment costs far more than a few riyals saved on the rate. This checklist helps shippers evaluate a trucking company before handing over their cargo.

1. Licensing and compliance

Confirm the company holds a valid Transport General Authority operating licence and that its vehicles are registered and inspected. Ask how driver hours and vehicle maintenance are managed.

2. Fleet ownership and mix

Does the company own or directly control its trucks, or broker every load to third parties? Owned or dedicated fleets deliver more consistent service. Check that they operate the vehicle types you need — curtain-side, box, flatbed, reefer, lowbed.

3. Coverage

Do they serve your origins and destinations directly, including remote sites, ports, industrial cities and cross-border lanes?

4. Tracking and proof of delivery

GPS on every truck, live ETA updates and electronic proof of delivery with signature and photo should be standard, not optional.

5. Insurance

Ask for carrier liability terms and the option to add goods-in-transit cover per shipment.

6. Drivers

Trained, licensed drivers with experience on your lanes and cargo type. For cold chain, hazardous goods or heavy cargo, specific certifications apply.

7. Specialised capability

If you need refrigerated, heavy, hazardous or cross-border transport, verify the equipment, permits and procedures rather than accepting a general assurance.

8. Pricing transparency

Quotes should itemise the base rate, free time, detention, accessorials and fuel adjustments so the invoice matches the quote.

9. Communication

A named account contact, clear escalation and a team that answers outside office hours when a truck is on the road.

10. References and performance data

Ask for references on similar lanes and for on-time and damage statistics. A confident trucking company will share them.

Beyond the checklist

Run a trial on one lane before committing volume, and review performance monthly.

TQM International is a licensed Saudi trucking company with an owned and dedicated fleet, GPS tracking, electronic proof of delivery and specialised cold chain, heavy and cross-border capability — and is happy to answer all ten questions.
