FTL Cross-Border Trucking from Saudi Arabia to the UAE: A Complete Guide

TQM International 2 min read

The Saudi–UAE lane is the busiest cross-border truck route in the GCC. Here is how an FTL shipment moves from Riyadh to Dubai.

Trade between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates runs largely on trucks. Full truck load (FTL) cross-border trucking connects Riyadh, Dammam and Jeddah with Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah in one to three days, carrying everything from FMCG and electronics to construction materials and re-exports from Jebel Ali. This guide covers what a shipper needs to know.

The route

Trucks from Riyadh travel east through Dammam to the Al Batha / Al Ghuwaifat border crossing, then on to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. From Riyadh to Dubai is roughly 1,100 km; from Dammam it is around 700 km.

Transit times

Driving time from Riyadh to the border is 6 to 7 hours and from the border to Dubai another 5 hours. Customs clearance at Al Batha can take from a few hours to a day depending on documentation, cargo type and traffic. Typical door-to-door transit is two to three days from Riyadh and one to two days from Dammam.

Documents

  • Commercial invoice and packing list.
  • Certificate of origin (GCC origin goods benefit from customs exemption).
  • Export declaration from Saudi customs and import declaration in the UAE.
  • Truck and driver permits, cargo insurance, and for food or pharma, the relevant health certificates.

Costs

Cross-border FTL pricing includes the trucking rate, border handling, customs brokerage on both sides and any duties. Ask for an all-in quote to avoid surprises.

Tips for smooth clearance

Share complete documents before the truck departs, use accurate HS codes, ensure invoice values match the packing list, and avoid mixing restricted goods with general cargo.

TQM International runs regular FTL departures between Saudi Arabia and the UAE with in-house customs coordination on both sides of the border and GPS tracking throughout.
