Heavy and Project Cargo Transport in Saudi Arabia: Planning the Move

TQM International 2 min read

Transformers, generators and pre-cast modules do not fit on a standard trailer. Project cargo needs planning, permits and the right equipment.

Saudi Arabia's giga-projects, power plants, refineries and data centres depend on the movement of heavy and oversized equipment: transformers, generators, chillers, storage tanks, pre-cast concrete and modular buildings. Project cargo transport is a specialised discipline that begins long before the truck arrives.

What counts as project cargo

Any item that exceeds standard trailer limits — roughly 2.5 m wide, 4 m high, 16 m long or 25 tonnes — is treated as oversized or heavy and requires special equipment and permits. Even standard-size items may be classed as project cargo when they are high-value, critical-path or delivered to a remote construction site.

Equipment

  • Lowbed and semi-lowbed trailers for tall or heavy machines.
  • Extendable trailers for long items such as beams and pipes.
  • Modular hydraulic trailers for the heaviest loads such as transformers.
  • Cranes, forklifts and rigging for loading and offloading at each end.

Permits and route survey

Oversized movements require permits from the transport authorities and, on certain roads, escort vehicles. A route survey identifies bridge heights, roundabouts, overhead cables and road works, and determines whether night movement is required.

Site delivery

Giga-project and industrial sites operate strict gate procedures, safety inductions and delivery slots. Coordinating these with the site logistics team avoids trucks waiting for hours — or days.

Timeline

Allow a minimum of one to two weeks for planning and permits on a standard oversized move, and longer for multi-vehicle convoys or loads over 100 tonnes.

Insurance and risk

Project cargo is typically insured on a per-move basis with a method statement, lift plan and lashing plan attached.

TQM International plans and executes heavy and project cargo moves across the Kingdom, from permits and route surveys to site delivery, as part of its supply chain solutions.
