Refrigerated transport — moving goods in vehicles with active cooling units — connects Saudi Arabia's ports, factories, cold stores and retail outlets. Every carton of frozen chicken, every crate of imported fruit and every box of insulin travels at least part of its journey in a reefer. Getting refrigerated transport right depends on the right vehicle, disciplined procedures and constant monitoring.
Vehicle sizes and their uses
- Refrigerated vans and 1-tonne pickups: city distribution to restaurants, pharmacies and homes.
- 3-tonne and 5-tonne Dyna reefer trucks: store replenishment and regional delivery, the most common vehicle in Saudi city cold chains.
- 10-tonne rigid reefers: larger multi-drop routes and short inter-city runs.
- 40-ft reefer trailers: inter-city line-haul between Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, port drayage and cross-border trips.
Main refrigerated lanes in the Kingdom
Jeddah Islamic Port to Riyadh carries a large share of imported frozen and chilled food. Riyadh to Dammam and Jeddah to Makkah and Madinah are daily distribution lanes. Cross-border reefers to the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar carry Saudi dairy, poultry and juices.
Best practice before loading
Pre-cool the trailer to the set point for at least 30 to 60 minutes. Verify the product is already at temperature — a reefer maintains, it does not chill warm goods. Load quickly, use dock shelters or strip curtains, and leave airflow channels around pallets.
Best practice in transit
Keep the unit running in continuous rather than start-stop mode for sensitive cargo. Minimise door openings on multi-drop routes and reclose immediately. Monitor via telematics with alarms set inside product limits so a drift is caught before it becomes an excursion.
Best practice at delivery
Transfer goods directly into the customer's cold room, capture the receiver's signature and attach the temperature log to the proof of delivery.
Questions to ask a refrigerated carrier
Are vehicles temperature-mapped and units serviced on schedule? Is there live temperature and GPS visibility? What is the backup plan if a unit fails? Can you provide temperature records from past shipments?
